Extra-Mural Studies (EMS)
Get In Touch
Placements for extra-mural studies are an essential element of undergraduate veterinary education and provides students with an unrivalled opportunity to gain real-life work experience that enhances your university-based studies. As a veterinary degree is a professional qualification, EMS constitutes an important component that helps to distinguish the qualification from other academic science degrees.
We at Shotter & Byers Equine Vets welcome veterinary students studying at university level. We offer two-week placements where you will have the opportunity to observe and assist our ambulatory Veterinary Surgeons with our client’s horses and ponies. Students are given the opportunity to observe the many varied aspects of specialist equine ambulatory practice.
To enquire for an EMS placement, please contact Jess Austin at jess.austin@shotterandbyers.co.uk giving the dates that you are available for placement. We offer placements on a first come, first served basis so it is advisable to get your request in to Kim as soon as possible as demand is high.
What to prepare?
We are based in a semi-rural location so it is important that you have access to your own vehicle. This is also important for the rare occasion when you may be requested to meet a Veterinary Surgeon at a different location than our Practice.
Please wear clean, protective and weather appropriate work wear and consider waterproofs and/or coveralls.
Sensible protective footwear must be worn at all times.
Please bring a packed lunch and plenty of fluids for the day.
For quiet periods, it is advisable to bring revision material and/or reading books.
Please email your EMS Assessment form to jess.austin@shotterandbyers.co.uk
